Ned can hobble without crutches, now, and has taken to visit me in the mornings. “My hip’s sore,” he says. “Look what you’ve done to me.” As employees, we get professional-development money. As a temp, I don’t get much, but Ned has ideas about how to spend it. Namely, on him. Specifically, on an iPad, which I don’t have nearly enough to afford. “You should buy it for me anyway, even with your own money” he says, “because you owe me.” I’ve become increasingly convinced that Ned hatched this whole ordeal in order to get free iPad.
